Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom (NKPK) – Tamil Film Review

Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom (Missing Some Pages in The Middle) stands unique in the Tamil film industry. The debutant director Balaji Tharaneetharan did very bold attempt in which he succeed enormously. The film was created from the real-life incident in that NKPK director Balaj also involved. But in the movie he chose to direct than act. The whole movie scripted well by Balaji even though most of the time 4 friends were in the scene the viewers never got bored or seeking for other characters.

The movie started with song which introduced the main four characters while displaying the cast info. The story began when four friends; Prem Kumar (Vijay Sethupathi), Balaji (Rajkumar), Bagavathi alias Bucks (Bagavathi Perumal) and Saras (Vigneswaran) were in a room mocking each other for a while. They got bored and decided to play cricket even though Prem was about to marry Dhanalakshmi (Gayathri) in 2 days.

In the ground they were split in to two teams and played hard. Where Bagavathi’s dominant character were displayed well by director. In one occasion balling, batting and catching were beautifully shot in slow motion. From there director was urging the audience to anticipate something about to happen. As expected the story plot started from there. When Prem was tried to catch a ball he stepped on a rock and slept. This made him to fall down on the ground backward where his head collided with the ground. He was started to lose his recent memories. He lost all the thing happened in his life within one year period and he lost his short term memory too. He only remembered that when his friend Balaji hit the ball, he was about to catch it but he slept and fell. He was telling that again and again. Friends thought he was making fun of them but eventually recognized that something was fishy. Whenever friends explained something he only held the memory for about a ½ minute and started to ask same question again. Saras got worried and told Balaji and Bucks that they need to consult a doctor because tomorrow Prem needed to attend his reception and day after tomorrow his wedding. Unfortunately Prem didn’t know that he was going to marry Dhanalakshmi. He didn’t remember Dhanalakshmi at all because Dhanalakshmi came in his life around one year ago. He forgot Dhanalakshmi and his love story around Dhanalakshmi.

So friends brought him to hospital where doctor was saying he was perfectly normal and he only lost temporary memory that would come normal about a day or so. So the friends decided not to tell to the Prem’s parents or Dhanalakshmi about this incident. Whenever Dhanalakshmi called Saras was telling her that Prem was working in the office where he needed to finish some auditing tonight urgently. They feared if they explained the situation to Prem’s parent or Dhanalakshmi that would cost his friend wedding. They thought that everything was going to be normal next day but Prem didn’t get his memory back. Then only they realized the depth of the problem but they wanted to carry on the act until wedding day. Which they succeeded? You should watch the movie to see it.

Vijay Sethupathi was carrying the film with ease and simplicity even though it was his second film after “Pizza”. When he was telling the same thing again and again audience were laughing because film were well plotted to match his repeated dialog. In that director Balaji shines. Rajkumar, Vigneswaran and Bagavathi Perumal acted very well through their emotions. Especially Rajkumar showed his emotion with class when he was bulging his eyes out and dropping his jaw. Bagavathi acted as a matured friend among others and showed his authority over others. Even though he knew what to do he was reluctant to take responsibility because of fear if something happened everybody was going to blame him. So he tried to push Balaji to do what he thought. Vigneswaran acted as an emotional and passive friend and showed his acting through eyes. Gayathrie came in small role but she acted accordingly.

Even though movie was very well directed there were some minor issues that should be mentioned here. In the reception and wedding hall Prem was always accompanied with his friend Saras and Saras was always explaining to Prem what to do, where huge crowd was present, without noticing by others even Dhanalakshmi. It was little unrealistic in that movie. The first half of the movie went on smoothly but the second half had some flaw. The reception and wedding ceremony took lot of part in the second half and camera didn’t moved a bit. Same thing happened again and again that made little boring for the audience.

The great thing about the movie was no major actors (only Vijay Sethupathi is known), no duet songs in the film, the movie’s story revolved around four friends without boring the audience. Director made audience to laugh through serious character than cheep jokes that stand bit unique from other.

Premkumar; he is the actual Prem (real Prem) but he chose to do Cinematography rather than acting, did good job in the camera by showing the characters in close-ups and low angles.

Siddarth Vippin and Ved Shankar did pretty decent job in background score and music.

Verdict: Worth to Watch! Debutant director Balaji brave attempt succeeded.
